Fat soluble vitamin which can be synthesized by skin cells during sun exposure. It can be obtained in two forms: ergocalciferol (foods sources) and cholecalciferol (sun). Main food sources of vitamin D are oily fish, organ meats like liver, eggs and red meat.

Who is in greater risk for vitamin A deficiency?
• People with limited sun exposure
• Dark skinned individuals
• Breastfeeding newborns
• Older adults
• Women going through menopause
• Individuals with fat malabsorption

Fat soluble vitamins are stored in parts of our body where fat is found. They cannot bet dissolver in body fluids thus they are not excreted with urine. It is advised  that you do not exceed the Recommended Dietary Allowance for these vitamins.

The role of vitamin D:
• Enhancement of calcium and phosphorus absorption
• Normal bone and teeth health
• Proper function of muscles
• Proper immune function

Vitamin D deficiency may result in:
• Brittle/ fragile bones, osteoporosis
• Increased risk for bone fractures
• Impaired neurological function
• Vulnerable immune system
