Balanced is considered a dietary pattern including a variety of foods in the right amounts and proportions.

How do vitamins and minerals work as catalysts in our body?

They are called micronutrients, because vitamins and minerals are needed in “small” (micro in Greek) quantities, but without any doubt these components are crucial to keep the human body up and running. Their role as catalysts for each and every function in the body, cannot be replaced. Most of them cannot be synthesized by us, therefore one should make sure to obtain them daily through a balanced diet. But what happens when the dietary pattern is imbalanced? Then the absence of micronutrients can lead to cell dysfunction, reduced energy production, impaired metabolism and weak immune function. In this case it is necessary to supplement our diets with nutrients.

Why is it important to follow a balanced nutrition?

  • Because by definition a balanced nutrition is reflected in your health status.
  • Because a healthy dietary pattern provides high quality energy, structure and protection to the body, as well as nutrients that coordinate all the complex bodily procedures.
  • Because in absence of a healthy diet all body functions depending on nutrients obtained from grains, proteins, fruits, vegetables, diaries and fats, will be compromised.
  • Because a balanced diet is a lot more than just a matter of nutrition. It is a part of a well balanced lifestyle.

Feel a quarter of your plate with grains. Make half of your grains whole grains.

Fill a quarter of your plate with a variety of low fat protein sources, such as: legumes, poultry, fish, low fat dairy and less frequently red meat.

Fill half of your plate with fruits and vegetables or eat at least 5 portions of fruits and vegetables per day.

For a greater range of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients consume fruits and vegetables in a variety of colors.

For better weight and blood lipid control, prefer low fat dairy options.

Emphasize on omega 3 and 6 heart healthy fats found in fatty fish, nuts and some vegetable oils.

Consumption of processed foods such as pizza, cookies, potato chips, commercial dressing and sugary drinks should be avoided.

It is not just a matter of what you eat, but also of how much you eat. Pay attention to your hunger cues and learn to recognize the signals your body is sending.

Drink at least 8 glasses of water if you are a woman and 10 if you are a man.

I should never forget that a balanced diet is part of an overall healthy lifestyle, including some type of physical activity for most days of the week.

Reading all of the above someone could conclude that following a balanced diet is not always so easy as it sounds, and that deficiencies are not so hard to occur. Dietary supplements, as their name implies,  supplement a diet influenced by the modern lifestyle. After all a holistic and wholesome approach to nutrition is synonymous to good health.
